doom and gloom…or opportunity?

It snows and the economy collapses… just as it was starting to do so well.   Do we really believe the snow made that much differance?   UK GDP down 0.5% and construction sector down 3.3%…pretty depressing stuff.    The broker Liberum Capital now recommends investors ditch their Persimmon shares as Redrow, Barretts and Bellway all head south.

If a country’s economy is 50% fact and 50% confidence then the media are creating self-fulfilling prophesies with such gloomy reading.   And old Merv’, our illustrious banker with a great portfolio of incorrect calls, leads the dance with warnings that the proletariat should brace themselves for the 1920’s all over again.  Personally, I’ve seen enough of that decade with Miss Marple and Inspector Poirot on the TV.   Too many murders by half.

So if new houses are struggling to be built and family finances are weak or feel under threat, where do people go as that new baby arrives or the toddler grows?    Because, of course, the world will continue to turn.   Nothing will stop, only a little adaptation of thinking and behaviour may be required.

The media have reported that more and more home owners will consider extending or adapting their homes, but that’s quite a daunting task!

Well, extensions can cost a lot less than people think.  Especially when builders are relatively quiet.   Employing an architect to produce drawings would seem the most logical first step, but could be a waste of money if you don’t know exactly what you want or are just exploring possible options.   The better way forward is to talk through all the options with someone independent who knows the game.
